1. As discussed in class, please provide three reasons why visuals are important to web content. Please ensure you go into detail for each item. (6 Marks)
1. Visuals Grab Attention and Keep People Interested
In the current age of social media, people scroll fast, and you have very little time to catch their attention. People who scroll fast often decide within seconds to stop and look at something. That’s where visuals become necessary to grab the attention of the person scrolling. A strong photo or graphic is usually the first thing that pulls someone in. It’s way easier to catch someone’s eye with an image than a text block.
Nowadays, with the average attention span getting shorter, content with visuals receives nearly 94% more attention, and visuals can boost click-through rates by 47%. (Briscoe, Create Perfect Social Media Posts, slide 11). That’s a significant increase in viewership and could make or break, especially for brands trying to stand out online and increase viewership and interactions. Visuals can be a great way to get people to stop scrolling and look. If a visual relates to the content effectively, the target audience will stop scrolling to read.
More engagement means more clicks, shares, and potential customers for businesses. These are very important factors for business and can help with overall growth. A single image related to the text and attention-worthy can be much more effective than a simple, boring headline or title.
2. Visuals Help Get the Message Across (And Make It Stick)
Most people tend to remember visuals over text; a good visual can ensure the message and content stick in their heads. Visuals help explain things quicker and make them easier to remember, people dont want to read all the filler and want to get straight to the point. For example, people instantly get what I do if I post a “before and after” of a car I edited. This makes it easier and quicker for people to get to the point and helps convey my message and what I do quickly.
Images also add feeling and context to text that may not tell the whole story or to a text that takes longer to tell the story. Visuals are a great way to show the reader what you are referring to physically. Those things help set the mood and tell a story. It’s not just about showing a product or service. It’s about making people feel something. That emotional connection is what makes content more powerful. When someone immediately understands your message and remembers it later, that’s a win. Good visuals make that way more likely to happen.
3. Visuals Get Shared More and Add Long-Term Value
Scrollers are likelier to stop scrolling if a post looks good, and people are likelier to share it. Visual content gets passed around way more than plain text because there is something to look at, especially on platforms like Instagram, X, or Pinterest. Some stats say infographics and images get 200% more shares than posts without them.
Also, visuals can be reused in many different ways. One good photo can be posted to Instagram, turned into a blog banner, shared in a story, or used in an ad. That makes your content last longer and work harder.
Visuals make your content look more polished, appealing, and professional. When people see high-quality images, they’re more likely to trust your brand. Trust matters heavily in the field, and it’s important to build trust with the reader as soon as you can. For an example from my business, a great car photo isn’t just nice to look at—it shows attention to detail and makes people want to work with you.
