5. Create a headline for an article about the SCC Advertising Program targeted to local graduating high school students. I am specifically not telling you what to do or the questions that need to be asked. Please provide the following:
a. Provide the headline
5 Reasons SCC’s Advertising Program will kickstart your career!
b. Provide an overview of the elements missing in the instructions required for this task.
Something missing from the instructions is information we need to make the headline more specific, things like the platform we will be utilizing for the headline along with what aspects of the program we are talking about. A headline was asked for but it’s a vague statement, we don’t know what it needs to relate to. Is the headline about the program in general? Is it about a specific aspect of the program? Is it about the career paths and opportunities the program will open up once you graduate? There needs to be more specific about the direction for the headline and what the content will be about so the headline can be more effective.
The platform also needs to be specified, is it for email? Is it for social media? Is so, what social platform? Is it for a special article for a specific platform? These are all questions that need to be answered so the headline can be tailored for its specific platform and intended purpose. This information is needed so the platform can be formed to created the best message for the users of the specific medium it will be seen on and engaged with.
c. Explain the headline you created, why, and any other reasons/justifications you need to provide to me for the headline you created. (6 Marks)
Using “5 Reasons” aligns with the strategy of luring numbers, making the headline more structured, predictable, and appealing to readers. It gives value to the target market, who are graduates who are looking to take the next step in their careers and could be looking for valuable information about the program. Graduating students are looking for career opportunities. This headline directly speaks to their need for guidance and direction. This structure also shows readers exactly what to expect, increasing their likelihood of clicking and reading further because they may be looking for this information, or it’s just now coming to their attention.
“Kickstart” acts as a power word that creates a sense of momentum and excitement and is meant to get the reader’s attention. Bold and confident language makes a headline more compelling and persuasive and helps make the headline clickable. It’s intended to make the readers feel like the program will prepare them well to succeed right out of our school, which could intrigue them and make them want to click and read further.
This headline also touches on the curiosity gap. It says, “5 reasons,” which can leave the reader with questions that the article will be able to answer. They may be wondering, “What are the reasons? Why will they kickstart my career? How will they benefit me?” And all these questions are the things we want them to wonder because they are things the article will answer.
